Prof Dr Michael Gehler

Michael Gehler, born 1962 in Innsbruck, studied at the Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck German Literature and History. He got his PhD there in 1987, and after his Habilitation in 1999, he was Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Institute for Contemporary History there (1999-2006). Since then, he got a call from the University of Hildesheim and became a Full Professor at the Institute for History. He was awarded a „Jean-Monnet Chair“ for European History four times by the EU Commission. His research focuses are Austrian, German and European Modern History, International Relations with special reference to the Cold War, the German Question and European Integration, as well as Transnational Party Cooperation of Christian Democrats and Conservatives in Europe, the South Tyrol Question and the History of Empires.

Role: An internationally renowned historian, who also oversees the programme development of the centre and contributes to the ‘European narratives and identity’ working group.

 

 

Prof Dr Krisztina Arató

ELTE; European University Institute, Florence, Italy

Krisztina Arató is a full professor and director at ELTE University, Faculty of Law, Institute of Political Science in Budapest. She studied history at ELTE University in Budapest and political science at the Victoria University of Manchester, England. She wrote her Ph.D dissertation on the social dialogue system of the European Union at Corvinus University, Budapest. She was the president of the Hungarian Political Science Association from 2015 to 2021. She is currently a Jean Monnet Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre (European University Institute, Florence, Italy). Her research interests are history and theory of European integration, and civil and social dialogue. She authored and edited textbooks about the European Union (The Voyage of Europe with Boglárka Koller, in Hungarian, the Political System of the European Union, co-edited with Boglárka Koller) and recently co-edited a volume on The Political Economy of the Eurozone in East Central Europe: Why In, Why Out? Ed. by Boglárka, Koller, Krisztina, Arató, Anita, Pelle. London, Routledge (2021). Her current research is on the potential correlations between Eurozone membership and the quality of democracy.

Prof Dr Péter Halmai

Hungarian Academy of Science

Péter Halmai, academician, President of the Economic Policy and Economic Theory Section of the Hungarian Economic Association, professor at the National University of Public Service and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, was elected President of Section IX of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS). Professor Halmai, who has also become a member of the Praesidium of the HAS, will hold the post until 2026. Péter Halmai, who was awarded the Jean Monnet Professorship by the European Commission in 1996, has been Vice-Chairman of the HAS’s Section IX since 2017. His main research interests include international economics, macroeconomics, comparative economics and agricultural economics. He is also a member of the Doctoral Council of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and has published nearly 400 papers, including several books and several works in foreign languages. His academic work has focused on the macroeconomics of European integration, the specificities of the European growth and catching-up model, the financial and economic crisis and the impact of the COVID epidemic, among other topics. Péter Halmai was the founding President of the Veszprém County Organisation of the HEA, and since 2022, he has been the President of the Economic Policy and Theory Section of the HEA. His work was recognised by the HEA’s Presidium in 2019 with the Economist Grand Prize.

Dr. András Szöllősi-Nagy

Dr. András Szöllősi-NagyProfessor at the Faculty of Water Sciences, Civil Engineer, Hydrologist, Dr. Techn., PhD, Dr. Habil., Doctor of Science of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Dr. HC mult., Full Professor at the Faculty of Water Sciences, National University of Public Service; Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Water Conflict Management, scientific advisor, Institute of Advanced Studies (iASK), Kőszeg, Hungary; President of the international Sustainable Water Futures Programme /Future Earth, Brisbane, Australia. Previously Secretary General of the Paris-based UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP) for 20 years, later President of its Intergovernmental Council, and then Rector of the UNESCO-IHE Institute of Water Education, Delft, the Netherlands. Currently Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Hidrológiai Közlöny (Hungarian Journal of Hydrology), formerly Editor-in-Chief. With T. E. Unny as founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Stochastic Hydrology and Hydraulics (Springer Verlag). He started his professional career in Hungary at VITUKI (Water Resources Research Centre), Budapest, in the Department of System Hydrology. Later, he became Deputy Director General for Science at VITUKI in 1989. During his career he worked at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the University of Waterloo, Canada, and was a visiting professor at several universities. He is a member and currently Vice-President of the Hungarian Academy of Engineering and Vice-President of the Hungarian Society of Natural Sciences. Member of the Euro-CASE and CAETS Boards, respectively.

Role: An internationally renowned civil engineer, who contributes to the ‘Sustainability and energy policy’ working group.

Prof. Dr. Anna Molnár

Ludovika University of Public Service

Anna Molnár is a Professor at the University of Public Service (Budapest) and Head of the Department of International Security Studies. She is the Head of the International Security and Defence Studies bachelor's and master's programs. She was responsible for the International Public Management bachelor's program and the International Public Service Relations Master's at the University of Public Service between 2016 and 2021. She was the Head of Programme of the MA in international studies at the University of Pannonia (Institute of Social Sciences and International Studies, Veszprém) between 2010 and 2013. She received her Ph.D. in international relations from the Corvinus University of Budapest (2003). Her published papers cover a wide range of topics focusing on security studies, EU Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), Europeanization of Hungary, the European Union’s Mediterranean policy and Italian history and politics. She gives courses at Hungarian and foreign universities on EU CFSP/CSDP, European integration, international studies and Italian politics. She had a Bolyai Research Fellowship of the Hungarian Academy of Science (2007–2010). She is a core member of the Doctoral School of Military Science of Ludovika. Within the framework of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), she has been attending the ESDC EAB sessions since 2013, and from 2017 at the sessions of the European Doctoral School on CSDP and the Implementation Group. She has also actively participated in the establishment of the new International Doctoral School on CSDP in the framework of ESDC.

Role: as a senior member of the staff, contributing to ‘Foreign, security and defence policy’ working group.

 

 

Dr habil Attila Marján

Ludovika University of Public Service

Attila Marján, economist with a legal degree and Ph.D. in international relations, has a dual career in public service/diplomacy and academia. He has 16 years of experience in EU diplomacy and at the European Commission. After having worked as Brussels-based diplomat for several years, he joined the European Commision in 2004. He was cabinet member of EU Commissioners. Later he worked for the European Commission’s Education Directorate General on higher education cooperation, the Erasmus+ and the Jean Monnet programmes. He is a regular speaker of international conferences on geopolitics, international and EU affairs. He gave lectures in several European countries, the USA and at leading Chinese universities.He recently resumed his academic activities as associate professor.

Role: as an economist, lawyer and former diplomat and senior member of the staff, contributing to delivering excellent teaching to students and training young professionals.
